Ru C.L: Mixtape Styles

Keeping it raw, Ru C.L (pronounced roo-cee-el) "Mixtape Styles" was written in a week and recorded in two days. Some of your your favourite old and new hip hop joints and jams have been re-interpreted by Ru C.L and mixed expertly by that manipulating agent, Katalyst.

RuCL may appear to be the new MC on the block, but in reality he’s been honing his skills in Australia’s vibrant underground hip hop scene since the early 90s. A collaboration with Mama’s Funk in 1995 was RuC.L’s first musical offering, followed by the self-funded EP Guerrilla Style Tactics. In 1998 RuCL made a guest appearance on 1200 Techniques “Hard as Hell” album and video clip.

RuCL’s reputation as a dynamic purveyor of all things funk has been consolidated throughout the years by impressive performances supporting the likes of Jurassic 5, Pharcyde, Mad Professor, Lee Scratch Perry, Supernatural and DJ Craze, with an upcoming support slot alongside The Black Eyes Peas set to go down in late September. No stranger to Australia’s biggest music festivals, RuC.L has also performed at The Big Day Out, Homebake and Vibes on a Summers Day.

Of Jamaican background, RuC.L’s beats are intrinsically linked to his Caribbean heritage. Having grown up in a nurturing musical environment, RuC.L’s mother is a singer, dancer and choreographer and even appears on two tracks on “Straight Down the Line”, whilst his sister is a singer and dancer and his late father was heavily involved in music. RuC.L has also worked tirelessly to develop his sonic skills beyond what he learned as a youngster, having made numerous trips back to his homeland and even studied at Kingston’s Jamaican School of Music.

His debut album “Straight Down the Line” is no ordinary hip hop offering. Recorded in Bristol, UK, the LP has a true universal flava, with RuC.L moving effortlessly between rugged hip hop vocals, Jamaican Dancehall (Sean Paul style), and soulful R&B. The first singles off the album are the slick, attitude-driven hip hop gem ‘Just One Shot’ that’s currently being playlisted by Triple J, whilst the smooth-as-silk collaboration with Koolism, ‘Determinator’, continues to garner support.

One of the Australian scene’s emerging stars, RuC.L brings a new brand of stylistically diverse hip hop to local audiences. It’s music that moves both your soul and your feet, and encourages the listener to give it all of up for the funk.
